Diamond Manufacturing

As diamond mining operations flourished, there was clearly an opportunity to establish and foster a secondary cutting and polishing industry in the NWT. As well, locally sorting rough stones coming from the mines could keep them separate from diamonds from the rest of the world.

The GNWT remains committed to developing and growing the NWT secondary industry.

The key to developing diamond manufacturing opportunities is reliable access to quality rough diamonds.  Agreements and arrangements with the NWT's operating mines guarantee Approved NWT Diamond Manufacturers have access to rough stones for the purpose of manufacturing diamonds in the NWT.

Diamond Policy Framework Updates

Changes to the Diamond Policy Framework were announced December 6, 2018

The Government of the Northwest Territories has amended its Diamond Policy Framework to take a new approach to realizing economic benefits from diamond manufacturing.

The policy now provides the opportunity for manufacturers to export a portion of their NWT rough diamonds in exchange for alternative investments in the NWT economy.
