Diamond mining has a long history in the Northwest Territories (NWT) and constitutes a significant portion of economic activity in the territory. There are two actively producing diamond mines in the NWT and one project nearing completion.
The Department is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the industry and promoting responsible development of this resource.
The NWT Diamond Industry supports and stimulates economic development by utilizing NWT contractors and businesses, and ensures the investment of a large percentage of profits back into the communities through ongoing support and philanthropy.
The mines have agreed to guarantee access to a percentage of rough stones to Approved NWT Diamond Manufacturers, which in turn supports the NWT secondary cutting and polishing industry as a viable economic venture, thus providing further employment opportunities to NWT residents.
