The NWT may have its next generation of film-makers following two successful workshops in Fort Smith, which were funded, in part, by Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI).

Seventeen individuals participated in the week-long workshops, led by Carla Ulrich of The YouthRise Project, which aims to create a fun environment for Fort Smith youth to get creative with film, photography and music.

The groups explored all aspects of movie-making with help from local industry professionals and got hands-on experience with DSLR cameras, sound equipment and editing software. During the workshops four films were written, acted, filmed, directed and edited by the youth group.

This was the third year that Fort Smith youth were able to participate in the film project; which provides participants with the skills needed to continue creating on their own once the workshop is done.

Through the implementation of investments and actions identified in Take One: A Film Strategy and Action Plan for the NWT, ITI is advancing the GNWT’s commitment to support the film industry and develop skills and competencies within the NWT.

The NWT Economic Opportunities Strategy identified the NWT film sector as a key to strengthening the economic viability of the Arts sector and increasing opportunities for investment and diversification in the NWT economy.
