The bright and stylish uniforms that will adorn Northwest Territories (NWT) athletes at the 26th Arctic Winter Games in Hay River and Fort Smith will also include a link to the NWT’s roots and traditional economy.
Team NT’s official “walk out” uniform was formally unveiled in a ceremony on Tuesday.
The mostly black jackets (celebrating the winter night sky) are accented with the unique blue of a frozen lake. Green (highlighting the Aurora) and white (the snow) stripes provide colour and energy to the uniform that will be worn by NWT athletes, coaches, mission staff, and cultural delegates. For the second successive games, the hood of the jacket is lined with Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur.
The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) partnered with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Sport North to provide trim for the 500 plus AWG team uniforms.
NWT wild fur is captured by trappers in the NWT and marketed and sold under the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur Brand to international markets through auction.“This brand is one that is in high demand by the international fashion industry on runways in Russia, China and Europe,” ITI Manager of Communications Drew Williams highlighted to athletes. “It’s the finest wild fur in the world - and it comes from NWT trappers who are also the best in the world. Wear the fur with pride.”
