Northern agriculture pioneer, France Benoit, welcomed ITI Minister Schumann and MLA Vanthuyne to Le Refuge Farm today. Located along the Ingraham Trail, Le Refuge, has produced barrels and bushels of veggies over the years, and is a staple for locals and visitors at Yellowknife’s weekly Farmer’s Market.

In addition to touring the garden grounds, Minister Schumann and MLA Vanthuyne discussed with France the potential for agriculture in the Northwest Territories, the work being done by the Yellowknife Farmer’s Market, and the commercial opportunities for local food production in the North Slave.

Residents like France have told the GNWT that they are interested in advancing agriculture and food production in the NWT. The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is working to support this vision with informed actions, investments and legislative tools that will advance the increased production of fresh, healthy, safe and more affordable locally grown food choices.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment released the NWT Agriculture Strategy earlier this year. To learn more about the agriculture projects and opportunities, contact your ITI Regional Office.
