The Yellowknife Farmer’s Market is a hotspot for many food growers and harvesters, which made it the perfect venue for the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) North Slave Region staff to talk agriculture.

Three staff members answered questions and handed out information, including the NWT Agriculture Strategy, at this week’s market.

“We know that people are curious about agriculture and with more and more discussions taking place we want them to know that ITI is a resource,” says Louanne Heron, Business Development Officer with the ITI North Slave Office. “The idea was to make ourselves visible and spread awareness about the opportunities in agriculture and business.”

Though the market is hosted in Yellowknife, the team answered questions from residents from other parts of the territory, including one individual interested in starting a garden in his home community of Gameti.

Through participation at events such as the Farmer’s Market, ITI is making educational agriculture resources available to enhance awareness, skills development, and capacity building, a recommendation under the NWT Agriculture Strategy.
