Commercial Fisheries Industry Support Program

Through the department of Industry, Tourism, and Investment (ITI) the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) supports the Great Slave Lake Commercial Export Fishery by providing funding directly and indirectly to the members of the Northwest Territories Fishermen’s Federation. There are five programs and services provided:

Fish Harvesters Support Program (Total: $35k per year)

  • Designed for small commercial fish harvesters
  • Assistance is based on previous year’s fish production records and can be used to purchase:
    • Equipment
    • Packaging
    • Marketing services

Commercial Fish Harvesters Support Program (Total: $75k per year)

  • Designed for large commercial fish harvesters
  • Assistance is based on previous year’s fish production records and can be used to purchase:
    • Equipment
    • Packaging
    • Marketing services

Fish Harvesters Expansion (Total: $70k per year)

  • Designed to defray costs associated with capital investments in their operations and to establish fish processing facilities

Fish Harvesters New Entrants Support Program (10k per year)

  • Designed as a one-time payout to provide support to defray a portion of the startup costs when entering the fishing industry

Traditional/Commercial Fish Harvesters Support Program (Total: $15k per year)

  • Designed to assists Tatline/Kaksia Lake fishers with production and transportation costs

In addition to individual funding programs, a contribution is provided annually to the NWT Fishermen’s Federation to defray a portion of operations, maintenance and capital replacement costs (administration).
