Oil and Gas Rights Management

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) manages the development of onshore oil and gas resources for public lands in the Northwest Territories

Management of oil and gas resources is done in a manner that balances northern interests, promotes investment in the sustainable development of NWT resources, and provides related information and advice. Above all, ITI is committed to using resource development to strengthen the economic base of all NWT communities.

Onshore petroleum resource management on public lands in the NWT is exercised under two statutes: the Petroleum Resources Act (PRA) and the Oil and Gas Operations Act (OGOA).

The Petroleum Resources Division is responsible for the issuance and management of Exploration Licences, Significant Discovery Licences and Production Licences for the onshore of the NWT. These rights are issued pursuant to the PRA.
