With the increase in energy prices over the last year and the growing impact of energy use on our environment, the importance of securing clean, renewable energy has never been more important. Hydroelectricity is insulated from rising oil prices and holds the promise of a sustainable energy source for future generations.
The challenge for the NWT is to make the upfront investments in planning required to take advantage of emerging opportunities. In addition to producing a clean and secure power supply for our communities, there are also tremendous economic opportunities in developing hydropower. This is demonstrated by the potential for the Taltson expansion project to displace more than 100 millions litres of diesel fuel with clean, “green” hydroelectric power and offers Aboriginal governments the opportunity to participate in the economic development of this resource through the development of projects on their traditional lands and also in the decision making process.
The draft NWT Hydro Strategy is a forward looking document aimed at identifying the best opportunities for hydro development. The draft Strategy is comprised of 13 key actions that will ensure that the foundation needed is in place so that residents of the NWT are positioned to build upon our existing hydro legacy.
