Fans of the hit show Timber Kings may see some familiar faces and locations in the show’s “Reach for the Sky” episode that premieres Sunday, April 16 at 8:00pm on HGTV.

This week’s show will document the work of the renowned Timber King log-smiths who constructed a 50-foot-tall log teepee at the iconic Papal Site in Fort Simpson successfully claiming the title of the world’s largest wooden teepee.

The work took place in September 2016 and is set to be a focal point of this year’s celebrations in the Dehcho community, including the 30th anniversary of Pope John Paul II and Canada’s 150th birthday.

A special event will be held in Fort Simpson on April 16 for the episode’s airing, including:

  • 9:30am: Fire Feeding Ceremony at the Teepee
  • 1:00 – 3:30pm: Cook Out at Liidlii Kue First Nation (LKFN) parking lot
  • 7:30 – 9:30pm: Screening of Timber Kings episode at the Rec Centre
  • Members from the Timber Kings team will be in Fort Simpson to participate and meet community members!

The project was brought to life through funding by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) provided to the Liidlii Kue First Nation through the Support for Entrepreneurs and Economic Development Program and Tourism Product Diversification and Marketing Program.

ITI is committed to supporting tourism and economic opportunities in all NWT regions. The site refurbishment is one example of enhancing community tourism offerings. Sharing a sneak peek of the NWT through the show, which is set to air in roughly 100 countries, is a valuable tool to increase interest in visiting, filming and living in the north.
