Agriculture, fisheries, trapping and commercial game harvesting generate income and employment for Northwest Territories residents by producing products and services consumed in the domestic and export markets.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment aims to improve local traditional economies and provide residents with the opportunity to pursue traditional livelihoods - the benefits of which are often measured in non-economic values.

In July 2009, the GNWT signed the Growing Forward bi-lateral agreement with the Government of Canada, providing programs and assistance to agriculture producers in the Northwest Territories. Read more about the program or download an application form here.

The Department works with the NWT Fishermen's Federation to assist them in marketing their fish to territorial markets.  The Fresh Water Fish Marketing Corporation is responsible for marketing fish from the NWT to national and international markets in order to increase fish trade and returns to fishers and the Great Slave Lake fishery.

About 40% of NWT residents over the age of 15 spend time participating in the traditional harvesting of trapping, fishing or hunting.
