The traditional economy has sustained the Aboriginal people of the Northwest Territories for thousands of years - providing food, clothing, shelter, tools and goods for trade.
The Government of the Northwest Territories recognizes both the economic value and inherent challenges in traditional harvesting.
The department provides annual funding assistance through the Community Harvesters Assistance Program (CHAP) to Local Wildlife Committees for distribution to their respective memberships.
For renewable resource harvesters, who use a variety of tools and equipment in their traditional harvesting, these program funds assist in defraying a portion of capital and operating costs of their harvesting activities.
Regional Programs and Services of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment are delivered through offices in: Yellowknife (North Slave), Fort Smith (South Slave), Norman Wells (Sahtu), Fort Simpson (Dehcho) or Inuvik (Inuvik).
