The visitor centre offers a sampling of some of the arts and crafts that can be found in the communities of the Western Arctic. It is well worth a visit for the displays depicting the adventure of a journey up the Dempster Highway to Inuvik, and of the whole western Arctic region of Canada. Like most of downtown Dawson City, the Information Centre is housed in a historic building. Once the ticket office for the British Yukon Navigation Company, that operated a paddle-wheeler steamboat service on the adjacent river. Before that, it was an open shed where freight was assembled or unloaded from the boats. The outside of the building has been restored to look much the same as it would have 100 years ago. |
