Hide and Fur on a shelf ready to be sold at-cost to local artisans in the NWT

Access the Hide and Fur Program

What is the Hide and Fur Program?

The Hide and Fur Program provides NWT artisans the support they need to get access to raw materials at affordable prices.

The Hide and Fur Program was first established in 2009 to offset the ban imposed on sealskin imports by the European Union in the interest of protecting the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) traditional economy.

In the interest of sustaining the traditional arts sector, NWT artists identified the need for access to raw materials at affordable prices so they can achieve profitable returns on traditional arts sold in the marketplace. In response to this need, the program evolved to include other raw materials such:

  • Traditionally tanned moosehide,
  • Beaver (sheared and natural long-hair),
  • Seal (natural and dyed),
  • Fox (arctic, red, silver and cross)
  • Muskrat

Who is eligible?

Artisans in the Northwest Territories

What is the benefit?

The GNWT purchases hide and fur and sells them at-cost to artisans in the NWT. The Hide and Fur Program provides NWT artisans the support they need to get access to raw materials at affordable prices.

How do I access the Hide and Fur Program?

Artisans can purchase hide and furs from the Traditional Economy Division of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment or at local distributors across the territory.

Visit any of these locations to access the program.
