Good afternoon, everyone.

It is a pleasure for my colleagues and I to join you here today to tour one of the mines that plays an important role in our economy.

With respect for the economic and impact agreements, regulatory processes; a commitment to community consultation, investment, and relationship-building; and a dedication to outstanding corporate citizenship;  Diavik has instituted a business model that has taken it to the top of our world-class diamond sector. It has also contributed to the growth of our businesses, communities, and the success of our Territory. 

An integral part of this success has been the importance Diavik has placed on our communities. We appreciate the funding and support Diavik has provided to initiatives like;  the Mine Training Society, Aurora College’s Northern Leadership Program, sponsorship and scholarship opportunities, community grants, and youth sports.

Together, you represent the technical skills, strong work ethic, and organizational proficiency that has built what is now recognized as Canada’s most productive diamond mine.

Moreover, you have done it all with a strong culture of safety and wish your mine rescue team the best of luck as they attend the upcoming Mine Rescue Competition.  We look forward to seeing you in Yellowknife in June.

It is good to hear that the A21 expansion project is moving forward.  On-schedule, on-budget; it’s what we have grown to expect from Diavik over the years.

I understand, also, that there have been some exciting geological developments recently. Congratulations to the geology team on finding new reserves which could bring the mine life past 2023.   

Through its Mineral Development Strategy, the Government of the Northwest Territories is also working to support resource development and mining in our territory; particularly in this downturn in the cyclical commodity market.

As we each move forward on our path, it will be important for us to do so as partners —government and industry working together.  We share many mutual goals and we have proven time and time again that we do great things when we work together.

I know my colleagues and I have looked forward to getting a firsthand look at all the excellent work being done by your team during the tour today.
