Virtual attendees of last week’s Yellowknife International Film Festival (YKIFF) got a look at the script that will guide the GNWT’s production of a new film strategy for the NWT.

As part of the festival’s industry programming, ITI’s Northwest Territories Film Commission took time to discuss the results of its public and stakeholder engagements on the current and future state of the NWT film and media sector.

Their “What We Heard” Report was also tabled (Nov 4) in the Legislative Assembly by Minister of ITI Caroline Wawzonek.

The NWT Film Commission is leading the development of the new film strategy – working closely with the NWT Professional Media Association (NWTPMA).

The planned five-year strategy will replace, Take One: Northwest Territories Film Strategy and Action Plan and guide GNWT film sector activities and investments from 2021 to 2026.

In stakeholder engagement workshops and surveys, the need for professional development has emerged as an important area of needed investment.  Funding, governance and northern storytelling have also been notable and consistent themes.

The ITI-sponsored presentation was only one of several industry-focussed workshops held as part of the COVID-adapted YKIFF 2020.
