A comprehensive overview of mineral activity in the Northwest Territories (NWT) in 2016 is now available. The Mineral Exploration Overview is produced by the Northwest Territories Geological Survey  (NTGS) and provides an update on the progress of mineral exploration and mining activities in the NWT.

There are several highlights from the 2016 report. Diamond exploration continued to progress with the opening of the Gahcho Kue Diamond Mine, the continued development on Diavik’s A-21 pipe and construction beginning on the Jay Kimberlite Pipe.

Gold exploration also advanced with promising results. Nighthawk Gold Corp. drilled several deposits, including the former Colomac Mine, and defined a gold resource of over two million ounces. TerraX Minerals drilled north and south of the former Con and Giant Mines in Yellowknife, which together produced 12 million ounces of gold over almost 70 years.

The NTGS is a division of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment. Through ongoing research, reporting and analysis, the division provides geoscience information to the public and stakeholders to improve awareness and planning.
