Mines and Minerals

The Northwest Territories (NWT) is rich in mineral resources and the responsible development of these resources provides long-term economic benefits for all NWT residents.

As of April 1, 2014, the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) is responsible for the administration of mineral exploration activities on public lands in the NWT.

Mine operations activities will continue to be regulated by the federal government under the Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act (MVRMA).

ITI promotes economic self-sufficiency through the responsible management and development of NWT minerals to create a prosperous, diverse and sustainable economy.

ITI is responsible for:

  • Policy development and planning associated with the development of the NWT’s mineral resources
  • Administration of third party rights (e.g., mineral claims)
  • Administration of royalties

ITI’s Mineral Resources Division will develop and deliver policy, programs and services related to minerals exploration and development and manage land tenure associated with mineral development.
