The Tourism Economy in the Northwest Territories

Tourism is an important part of the Northwest Territories economy.

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) helps tourism businesses by offering programs to build their skills and access funding to start or grow their tourism businesses. These programs also support the tourism industry by providing resources for marketing, indigenous cultural tourism projects, community and industry engagement, tourist-oriented infrastructure, tourism operator skills development, planning and market research.

At the same time, Northwest Territories Tourism works to promote the Northwest Territories as a "Spectacular", world-class tourist destination. From business travel, conferences, cultural and traditional experiences and exciting outdoor adventures on land, water, or snow.

Engaging with the community

Every 5 years, the GNWT reviews the successes and challenges of the past and works with Northwest Territories communities and entrepreneurs to develop a new strategy for the following 5 years. The Tourism 2025 - Roadmap to Recovery strategy is coming to an end. This strategy has helped the tourism industry recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and challenging wildfire seasons, bringing the NWT to near pre-pandemic levels.

In the coming months, the GNWT will connect with local residents, community organisations and tourism industry professionals to help build the Tourism 2030 strategy. This process will include in-person engagement sessions as well as an online survey on the Have Your Say platform.

In-person sessions are scheduled for:
