The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) published 2017's Mineral Exploration Overview today.
This latest overview details a spike in new claims year-over-year — sparked in-part by a mini-staking rush after two reports on the geology of the Slave Geological Province were released by the NWT Geological Survey earlier this year — and outlines exploration efforts across the territory.
It also provides an update on GNWT efforts to support responsible mineral exploration.
Some highlights:
- 10.5 million carats of diamonds produced
- $1.27 billion in diamond value produced
- 199 claims staked in first three quarters; 114 more than 2016 in total
- 150,000 hectares worth of land staked in first three quarters; 108,000 more than 2016 total
- Increased budget for GNWT Mining Incentive Program from $400,000 to $1 million.
