The GNWT’s Departments of ITI and Education, Culture and Employment, together with NWT Tourism, are working with the City of Niagara Falls to celebrate more than just NWT athleticism at his year’s Canada Summer Games.
Multi-sport events provide a valuable opportunity for regions to showcase their special and unique characteristics and attractions to athletes, their supporters and spectators.
So, in addition to the NWT’s sporting contingent at the 2022 Canada Summer Games, a team of talented artists has been selected to champion the creativity, industry, and culture of the Northwest Territories as part of an exciting cultural event dubbed the 13 for 13 Festival.
The event will see Niagara Falls’ 13 municipalities paired with one of Canada’s Provinces or Territories to showcase our nation’s diversity of talent coast to coast.
Saturday, August 13th will be the NWT’s turn to shine at the Falls.
In the afternoon, the Art Market will host the following five NWT artists:
- Catherine Blondin: Traditional beadwork artist from Sahtuotine (Sahtu Dene) from Liidli Kue (Fort Simpson)
- Alyssa Ross: Traditional Gwich’in beadwork and caribou tufting artist from Inuvik in the Beaufort Delta
- Jessica McVicker: A contemporary painter living in Yellowknife who paints the NWT with a fresh set of eyes.
- Jonathan Gillingham: a Norman Wells- based photographer who captures NWT landcapes, skyscapes and wildlife on film.
- Genevieve Clarke: From Enterprise, NT, Combines Beadwork and painting.
Evening entertainment will begin with Gwich’in flutist and storyteller William Greenland and Tlicho painter James Wedzin who will team up for a special multimedia experience.
And finally Juno Award Winner Leela Gilday and her band will perform a full show in front of a beautiful video backdrop showcasing the Spectacular Northwest Territories. The NWT showcase will end with fireworks and the famous Niagara Falls bathed in the colours of the Aurora!
