July 17th is National Parks day in the Northwest Territories. With so many great parks to choose from, NWT residents have an abundance of reasons and opportunities to celebrate. Each region is celebrating National Parks day in their unique way. See what your region has to offer!

North Slave:

On Friday July 16th,

  • Fred Henne is hosting some fun events at the main boat launch! Sign up for voyageur canoes rides departing at 1,2 and 3pm. Children’s nature craft activities and some interactive knowledge sharing about the plants, and animals thriving on Long lake. Call the Gatehouse to register for canoe rides 867-920-2472

On Saturday July 17th

  • Kids grab your explorer hats for a fun Parks Day Scavenger Hunt over at Reid Lake. Meet at the gatehouse at 11am. There will be prizes!
  • Over at Prelude Lake there will be another Scavenger Hunt with a BBQ lunch, everyone is welcome! Meet at the Gatehouse for a fun time in the Nature Trail.

South Slave:

On Saturday July 17th

  • Hay River Territorial Park will be hosting a hotdog roast with refreshments at 1pm
  • The Gatehouse is hosting an afternoon BBQ, everyone is welcome
  • Little Buffalo River Crossing Territorial Park is hosting a day filled with family fun Parks Day games. Balloon Burst, egg toss and some fun races. Meet at the Gatehouse at 2pm to participate.

The Sahtu region is celebrating National Parks Day next weekend.

Sahtu:

On Saturday July 24th

  • From 1:00pm - 4:00pm, come to Jackfish Lake for some BBQ, face painting, coloring table and a cotton candy scavenger hunt! A floaty race is also happening, you must bring your own floaty and a paddle if you choose to use one. Lifejackets will also be provided if you do not own one. Register for the floaty race by July 21st by calling the town of Norman Wells @ 867-587-3700 to get your name registered for a prize draw!
  • From 5:00pm – 7:00pm, Mackinnon Park is hosting a 15+ volleyball tournament. 6 players per team and 5 teams in total. Frisbee golf and a water balloon fight are being offered for all ages. Simply register for each event at Mackinnon Park the day of!
