As an online introductory course, the focus is on basic prospecting relevant to NWT mining. Activities include how to prospect, claim staking, assessment regulations, marketing yourself and your properties, basic geology, and the exploration cycle in the prospecting industry.

The course will take place over 2 weekends (March 18/19, and March 25/26), and has a $50 signup fee, which covers a starter kit, prospecting license, and tags for prospecting. The kit itself contains essentials like a hammer, jeweller’s loop, safety gear, outdoor working gear (like an all-weather notebook and compass), and more.

Delivering the course itself is Landen Powell from the Northwest Territories Geological Survey, and Jessica Bos from the NWT Mining Recorder’s Office in Yellowknife.

This course has always been well received and the Mine Training Society says its excited to see its return. They hope that by delivering the course online, community members from across the north will be able to participate.

The course is delivered in partnership between the Mine Training Society and the Department of Industry Tourism and Investment (ITI).
