According to the NWT Bureau of Statistics, information released July 20, 2022 by Statistics Canada indicates the Yellowknife All-Items Consumer Price Index in June rose by 8.3% compared to one year ago, the largest annual increase for Yellowknife since January 1991. By comparison, annual prices increased by 8.1% for Canada, 8.5% for Edmonton, 7.7% for Whitehorse and 4.3% for Iqaluit.

Consumer prices increased in all provinces between June 2021 and June 2022. Prince Edward Island had the highest increase (10.9%), while British Columbia and Ontario both had the lowest (7.9%). For Yellowknife, fuel oil and other fuels was the main contributor to the increase, rising by 64.3% compared to 45.2% for gasoline.
Between June 2021 and June 2022, in Yellowknife, food prices grew by 9.6%, largely a result of the 11.6% increase in food from stores. Vegetables and other food from stores experienced the largest increases of 15.1% followed by meat (11.3%). Overall prices in Canada for food increased by 8.8% with the smallest increase of 5.6% in Whitehorse.
