The world’s only circumpolar horror and fantasy film festival is poised to provide the thrills and chills attendees have come to expect since its launch seven years ago.

Dead North Film Festival will bring together filmmakers from across Canada’s North to showcase more than 40 short films produced over two months in the dead of winter.

Each year, the festival attracts everyone from rookies to seasoned pros to try their hand at genre films in Northern locations.

The festival has grown to include visiting experts to run workshops on a range of topics including production, marketing, and makeup; guest judges from around the circumpolar world; and competitions to spur participation in the creative arts.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment, through the NWT Film Commission and SEED program, are long-time supporters of Dead North.

The festival regularly provides an outlet for up-and-coming producers to get their start, and build their below-the-line skills as they prepare to pursue media arts as a career.

“This is a great example of how the support we are providing through the Film Strategy is making a real impact on our industry,” says Film Commissioner Camilla MacEachern, who leads the GNWT’s film efforts.

“Not only are we helping build capacity and community, we are also contributing to a fun event.”

The GNWT’s film strategy rolled out in 2015, and identifies a series of actions to advance the NWT’s media arts industry in support of economic diversity.
