Fort McPherson Greenhouse Flourishes with Local Events

July 24, 2017

The green thumbs at the community greenhouse in Fort McPherson have been buzzing with action lately. Potatoes, cabbage, turnip, kale, lettuce, radishes, beans, peas, beets and herbs are all thriving.
In mid-July, children from the community participated in a greenhouse event where they released ladybugs in the plants, enjoyed activities and sampled healthy snacks. Lady bugs aid in pollenating the plants and keeping aphids and other bugs from eating the crops.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment funded the construction of the greenhouse, which was built by local community members. The Department also purchased equipment and supplies for the garden such as water pumps and tanks, hand tools, soil and seeds. Garden Coordinator and summer student, Alexandra Neyando, has made incredible progress in the greenhouse this summer.
The garden has brought the community together as well – young ones are learning all about how to grow fresh produce and elders have a chance to share their knowledge and watch progress.
