It’s not every day that Disney comes to town. But, last January, as the temperatures dipped between – 30 and – 40 Celsius in Yellowknife, a small team from Disney arrived in Yellowknife to shoot for their next feature film. The snow-covered terrain, frozen lakes, and frosty temperatures of the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) offered the perfect setting for elements of the new sci-fi adventure A Wrinkle in Time starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling.

Pieces of traditional NWT art will be travelling over 8,000 km to PyeongChang, South Korea to help NWT-born Olympic athletes represent their northern Indigenous roots to the world. Smiles, handshakes and hugs abounded in Tulita on Tuesday at a community feast celebrating the completion of the Canol Trail wire clean-up program. At each table, stories were shared. Some talked about their hiking adventures and the majestic peaks, tunnels and waterfalls where few, if any, people have ever set foot. Others, with broad smiles, spoke about the work on the trail; grueling yet satisfying - and how it created a chance to reconnect with their culture.
Northwest Territories (NWT) filmmakers are making their presence – and talent – known at the Available Light Film Festival in Whitehorse, Yukon which runs February 3 – 11.
