For Ulukhaktok’s David Kuptana, navigating the land is in his blood.
His father was a polar bear hunter and worked as a guide for those with the gumption to give the northern hunt a shot. David grew to love hunting and mastered the art with his father’s help. He would later follow in his footsteps and began guiding for a wilderness outfitting company —using the skills he gained on-the-land to share his land with visitors from all over the world.
This latest overview details a spike in new claims year-over-year — sparked in-part by a mini-staking rush after two reports on the geology of the Slave Geological Province were released by the NWT Geological Survey earlier this year — and outlines exploration efforts across the territory.
Minister Schumann was presented this week with a commemorative photo of Grade 4 students participating in the Mining Matters program. For Community Relations Advisor, Valerie Gordon, who coordinates the GNWT’s support and delivery of the program, the happy smiling faces are an affirmation of the program’s down to earth approach – and the importance of using creative demonstrations to facilitate an understanding of mining in today’s youth.
Excellence in mining and exploration was celebrated yesterday at the first-ever NWT MAX Awards. The event wrapped up this year’s Geoscience Forum which ran November 14 - 16.
The GNWT’s Department of ITI hosted a public engagement session at the Yellowknife Geoscience Forum this week to gain even more input for its development of the NWT’s first homegrown mining and exploration Act.
The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment was recognized this week for its ongoing support of the Mining Matters Program. The industry-sponsored program, dedicated to delivering education on geoscience and mining to students in Grades 4-12, was presented in three regions this year by the Department’s Client Services and Community Relations Unit (CSCR).
The second Resources and Energy Development Information (REDI) Tradeshow popped up in Hay River on November 9, 2017. Residents were invited to stop by, ask questions and have discussions with subject matter experts on several themes, including: alternative energy, mineral exploration and mining, petroleum exploration and development, geoscience, environment and natural resources, regulatory and enforcement, and Indigenous affairs.
Feedback from local manufacturers, industry, business, government and members of the public will play a crucial part in guiding the development of the NWT Manufacturing Strategy. Insightful discussions about manufacturing in the Northwest Territories have taken place in-person in Inuvik, Norman Wells, Fort Simpson, Fort Smith, and most recently, Hay River.
On November 2, 2017 members of the Northwest Territories growing tourism industry gathered to celebrate their own. The NWT Tourism Gala and Awards were held in the Inuvik at the Midnight Sun Complex following the NWT Tourism AGM and showcased all that the territory has on offer.
