Minister Wally Schumann has tabled the Mineral Development Strategy 2015-2016 Annual Report in the legislature.
The report provides an accounting of actions and achievements realized from the ongoing implementation of the 2013’s Mineral Development Strategy — the guiding document for the GNWT’s work to realize, responsibly and sustainably, the full potential of the NWT’s rich mineral resources.
Key achievements highlighted in the 2015-2016 report include:
- Investments in quality geoscience information made possible through the Northwest Territories Geological Survey
- The expansion of mining and exploration incentive programs in the NWT
- The promotion of the NWT as a place to invest for mineral exploration and development
- The increased participation of Aboriginal governments and businesses in the exploration and mineral resource sectors; and
- An increased awareness in NWT businesses to the procurement needs of NWT mines
The GNWT has committed to supporting mining and exploration as the foundation of the NWT’s economy.
In addition to funding government programs and services through royalty payments and corporate income taxes, mining contributes billions in exports, hundreds of millions in economic activity, and thousands of well-paid jobs for the NWT each year.
