The Government of the Northwest Territories' Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment today released Morel Mushroom Workshops and Harvests in the Northwest Territories in 2015; a report outlining activities surrounding last summer's harvesting activities.

Over $1.9 million in cash flow was generated over a 58-day harvest period, with 200 harvesters taking part over a 34-day period from May 29 to July 1 — 50 from Southern Canada — and 50 Northern harvesters taking advantage of extended harvesting continuing to July 25, with $1.7 million remaining in the North.

The total harvest amount was estimated at 40,000 lbs of flash-dried morels with a mean market value $15 million.

In support of a successful harvest, the Department of ITI facilitated workshops in forest fire sites around Kakisa, Fort Providence, Behchoko, Whati, Fort Resolution, and Lutsel K’e, with 1700 Northerners and 300 visitors attending.
