Claudine came to Canada in July 2015 under the sponsorship program to join her husband in Gatineau.

“I landed my first job at a daycare in Gatineau a month after my arrival. It was a wonderful experience. However, I had to resign to follow my husband, as he’d accepted a teaching job in Yellowknife. I found a job at the French daycare in Yellowknife. However, I longed to go back to school. So, at the end of my contract, I decided to open a daycare at home while taking part in a distance education program. We have a large house with plenty of room, and I have three years’ experience in Canada. Everything is set up to welcome children properly at my daycare, ‘Les Rossignols.’”

Challenges:

“My top challenge is my daycare and taking in as many English- and French-speaking children as possible. The government allows me to accept a maximum of eight children. I might be able to open a larger daycare at some point in the future.”

Soft spot:

“The community. It’s rare to come across a city where people are very welcoming and receptive, and where you can make friends easily. I was welcomed with open arms when I came to Yellowknife.”

Next steps:

“I just want to take advantage of everything Yellowknife has to offer. We just bought a house, so we won’t be leaving anytime soon.”

Words of advice:

“If you have the opportunity to emigrate to Canada, I encourage you to do so. It isn’t easy. You have to put a lot of effort into it, but it’s worth it in the end.”
