Lilia travelled from Algeria to Paris with her husband Tarik to attend the Destination Canada job fair in 2016.

The long journey was well worth it—Lilia was able to land a job as a supervisor at Javaroma. Two years later, they are both permanent residents. Tarik works for Det'on Cho Logistics, and Lilia is on the lookout for new professional challenges in the NWT capital.

Celebrating Francophone Immigration Week: A Guest Series With the CDÉTNO

“They did it” was the phrase that really inspired me during the Destination Canada job fair on November 17, 2016, in Paris. I asked myself, “What if one day I get to be like these people who made their dreams of living in Canada come true?” On March 10, 2017, our dream—mine and my husband Tarik’s—came true, and the adventure is only just starting. The Ice Road Trek, the snow castles, the bison, Canada’s 150th anniversary parade, Great Slave Lake, the fishing, the Folk on the Rocks festival, the barbecues, the beautiful friendships, the beautiful aurora borealis light shows… it’s not a documentary, it’s not made‑up, we’re not just dreaming. It’s the beauty of the Northwest Territories. And we’re living in the middle of it.

If you’re wondering how it happened, know that we owe all this happiness to our fairy godmother, Audrey, and the whole CDETNO team at the Paris job fair. The whole process started that day: the job offer, the support and explanation of steps to take, email exchanges, telephone calls and more until we arrived. And I can confirm that the work of the integration organizations didn’t stop there. We had an orientation, follow-up and support on all fronts (medical, social, cultural). They also worked hard on behalf of my husband and helped him find a job. Their goodwill towards us helped us integrate seamlessly into the NWT community.

And the dream doesn’t stop here. One of our deepest desires is to become Canadian citizens."
