It’s been six years since Louis first stepped foot into the Northwest Territories. From temporary worker to permanent resident, this young Franco-Madagascan is now en route to becoming a Canadian citizen.
Celebrating Francophone Immigration Week: A Guest Series With the CDÉTNO
“I left Madagascar at 18 to study at Université de la Réunion, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in biology. I then spent two years at Université de Paris-Est Créteil doing a master’s degree in bioenvironmental engineering. After I finished the degree in 2011, I heard about Destination Canada. I met with various representatives from each Canadian province and territory to find out more information, and I was intrigued by the NWT. I have to admit that my geographic, cultural and overall knowledge about Canada was quite limited at the time. I wanted to change that and satisfy my own curiosity, so I decided to make the trip to Yellowknife in November of 2012. Yes—it took me a year to finally leave. Now, not only am I still living here, but I’ve also become a permanent resident. I started a career in the health industry and now work as primary care paramedic for a company called Advanced Medical Solutions. It’s a unique experience, and I encourage adventurous types to give it a shot. You won’t be disappointed.
One thing you should know is that although NWT is majority English-speaking, the Francophone community is very much present!”
