A talented Northwest Territories’ (NWT) artist took to the Parisian coast for a prominent international film festival this week.

Mary Caroline Cox — a well-known Yellowknife-based musician and television producer — was at the Sunnyside of the Doc festival in La Rochelle, France as part of Telefilm Canada’s delegation from June 20-23.

Cox and the Canadian delegation, consisting of some 60 companies involved in documentary production, will join nearly 2000 international industry professionals and decision-makers at the festival.

She will specifically be focused on networking with broadcasters to pitch her latest production Wild Kitchen, which follows the preparation process of foraged and traditional foodstuffs in the North.

The Government of the Northwest Territories provided SEED funding through the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) NWT Film Commission to assist with Cox’s travel costs.

The Department of ITI funds projects like this as part of the 18th Assembly’s mandate to support development of skills and competencies for NWT film producers.

Additionally, improving the national and international profile of the NWT film sector was identified as a priority in Take One: A Film Strategy and Action Plan for the NWT; a document which outlines the Department of ITI’s strategic approach to media arts in the NWT.
