Skilled workers are critical to the economy and the Northwest Territories economy needs NWT university students to return to the North. NWT students heard that message from the very top this week in Vancouver.

Premier Cochrane, Minister Nokleby and Minister Thomson took the opportunity, while attending AME Roundup, to invite students studying in the Vancouver area to join the NWT team for lunch.  It’s part of the GNWT’s ongoing plan to involve NWT students and the leaders were keen to share their insights and to personally encourage students to return home with their education and skills.

While the conference environment lent itself to topics like engineering, geology and mineral development, the GNWT leaders stressed that all careers and skill sets are needed in the North.

It’s a message reflective of the GNWT’s focus on education, training and skills development and ensuring that Northerners are first in line for the numerous jobs opening up over the next 10 years.

The luncheon struck a special note with Minister Nokleby who attended the University of British Columbia as a Geological Engineer and previously attended AME Roundup as a student.   The event brought together discussions on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum, women in mining, and mentorship – all of which are priorities for Minister Nokleby, who helped launch the first NWT Women in Mining Chapter only a few months ago.
