The Culture Centre in Whatı̀ was buzzing this week with information and ideas on maximizing benefits and opportunities arising from the construction of the all-season road to the community.

Local residents and guest speakers discussed a number of topics in a series of “Opportunity Sessions” sponsored by the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Tłı̨chǫ Government.

They included the need for business readiness training and programs offered through the GNWT and the Métis Déne Development Corporation (MDDF). Special Guest Speakers (Tłı̨chǫ Entrepreneurs) included:

  • Alex Nitsiza, owner of James Company Limited;
  • Dave Wilson, owner of Northern Exposure;
  • Luke Grosco, owner of FC Services;
  • Violet Mackenzie and Randall Raymond who are the owners of Behchokǫ̀ Towing.

The event closed with a public trade show from 5pm until 7pm which included prize draws!

“The Tłı̨chǫ all-season road will be the biggest economic opportunity for this region since the diamond mines opened” said Kris Johnson, North Slave Regional Superintendent for Industry, Tourism and Investment. “This is a first step we’re taking in an effort to help people in the region make the most of it.”
