For an aspiring artist in high school, Take A Kid To Work day created a new opportunity to learn about the NWT’s impressive art industry. Kaitlyn Stewart, in grade nine at St. Patrick High School, spent her time shadowing ITI’s NWT Arts staff Johanna Tiemessen and Kayla Cooper.

“I’ve never really enjoyed sitting at a desk all day so I want to tackle a career that lets me work with my hands and use my creativity,” says Kaitlyn who enjoys sculpting and jewelry making.

NWT Arts was a natural fit.

During her mini-internship she learned about the different types of fur in the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur program, prepared materials that will be used in an upcoming arts display and catalogued a stunning array of local artwork – from mukluks and dolls to birchbark baskets and purses; each with intricate beading, tufting and sewing.

Kaitlyn has already begun researching potential art schools to attend once she graduates from high school and envisions a future in arts, crafting or design. One thing is for certain, NWT Arts is always excited to welcome new artists!
