ITI sponsored a live Zoom workshop Thursday for tourism professionals in the North to learn the basics of aurora science, aurora forecasting, and aurora photography.

This free Zoom aurora borealis information and training session was led by James Pugsley, President of the Astronomy North Society and Northern Project Manager for AuroraMAX.

Participants learned how to monitor space weather conditions, when and where to watch for auroras and how to respond to questions about Canada’s Northern Lights.

This training was reserved for tourism professionals – including tour guides, operator staff, tourism organizations, visitor centre staff, hotel staff, government employees, restaurant staff, taxi companies and other hospitality sector services.

Training was provided courtesy of the Government of the Northwest Territories Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI), the Astronomy North Society and the Northern Frontier Visitors Association.

Through the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment, the GNWT is committed to advancing excellence in the Northwest Territories’ tourism industry with training, support and skills development for service providers.
