Running a great Aurora tour is much more than facilitating picture-taking opportunities.

Good operators have the knowledge, ability and know-how to transform the NWT’s environmental phenomenon into once-in-a-lifetime experience.

It takes hard work, customer service and attention to detail.  But it also means understanding environmental science, and making it relevant to visitors.

An Aurora Borealis for Tourism Professionals workshop is helping tourism operators do just that. The GNWT’s Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment sponsored Astronomy North’s latest sessions targeted at tourism professionals.

“Knowing the basics of space weather can make a big difference to tourism operators,” explains James Pugsley — President of Astronomy North and facilitator of the workshop. “Knowing where and when to look for the Aurora, and how to respond to questions customers have is so important in a place where the sky has a huge impact on the economy.”

Two free sessions were held at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre on November 9 and 10 — both well-attended by local operators.

Participants were introduced to the basics of aurora science, forecasting, photography, and more.

The GNWT provides a number of programs, services and supports for NWT operators under its Tourism 2020 plan to grow and strengthen the NWT’s tourism sector in support of greater economic development and diversification.

Two more workshops will be held January 12 and 13.
