The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s engagement team was in the Dehcho last week to begin their NWT-wide conversation with residents on proposed changes to laws governing oil and gas development in the Northwest Territories.

Their first community visit was to Fort Simpson on March 13th.

While residents are invited to provide input on anything related to oil and gas development, the workshop-style engagements are designed to capture input on three key themes in which specific changes are being proposed.  All input received is being recorded and will be considered as proposed changes move forward.

The Fort Simpson session was a success, with more than 20 participants taking part. Community members were enthusiastic and there was a lot of interest.

While the engagement team is in each community, they are also meeting with Indigenous governments and organizations to get their input. In Fort Simpson, the engagement team sat down with the Dehcho First Nations and Łíídlı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation.

Next, the team made their way to Fort Liard. The Liard area is partially home to one of the NWT’s largest, most recent natural gas finds. Residents had a lot to say about oil and gas.

Eighteen people contributed input - with some conversations lasting up to an hour. The team also spoke with Chief Eugene Hope of the Acho Dene Koe First Nation.

Next stop for the engagement: the Sahtu and Beaufort Delta. They will be stopping in Norman Wells on March 26th and Inuvik on March 27th.

Check out all the public engagement dates here.

Can’t make it to the sessions? We’re running a comprehensive engagement reaching far beyond the community visits so you can take part whenever you’d like, however you’d like.
