For the second time in three years, Yellowknife will feature in one of Canada’s most popular reality shows – and locals played an important role.
The Amazing Race Canada visited the capital earlier this year to film scenes for their latest season. Tomorrow, the episode goes to air and the country will see Yellowknife like they may have never seen before.
The NWT Film Commission worked with the producers of the series as they picked locations and navigated their local needs.
Guest productions like the Amazing Race Canada can play an important in attracting other producers to a locale, as Film Commissioner Camilla McEachern explains.
“You have a situation where people who are heavily involved in the industry are getting the chance to see what we have to offer – versatile locations and a unique vibe.” she says. “And beyond that, you get the chance to prove this is a great place to work.”
Locals from both Yellowknife and Dettah were hired by the producers – from drivers and lookouts to production and manpower coordinators, the production provided locals with the opportunity to take on meaningful roles in a big production.
It’s an example of the NWT’s Film Strategy paying dividends.
With nearly five years of enhanced promotion of the sector, big guest producers showing up is becoming more common, and this is presenting locals with more chances to hone their crafts.

That’s a positive sign given the two-pronged objective of the Strategy: encouraging guest productions, while fostering opportunity and progress in the local industry.
Tune into CTV tomorrow at 9pm EST, 7pm MST, to see how the capital is used in the show!
