Minister Schumann busy at NWT Legislative Assembly office

Proposed Legislation

Background

Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment Wally Schumann is introducing legislation in the Legislative Assembly during the February-March session

These are the result of two legislative initiatives pursued as part of the GNWT's Mandate 2016-2019:

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment was tasked with developing the policy intentions for these legislative initiatives and collaborating with the Department of Justice to translate those policies into legislation.

Plain language awareness materials are now available to enhance public understanding as opportunities for feedback on the Bills approach.

All interested are encouraged to peruse the information to the left, get informed, and get involved when opportunities are offered to have their say.

These projects are part of the territorial government's commitment to evolving the legislative framework to realize a balanced vision for natural resource management in the NWT.

What's Next?

After they are introduced in the Legislative Assembly, these Bills will become business of the Standing Committee on Economic Development and Environment, who will have 120 days for consideration. This would include opportunities for public comment.

Stay tuned for opportunities to comment on this Bill as part of the Standing Committee on Economic Development and Environment’s considerations in the future here.
