Community Economic Development (SEED)

These funds can help organizations looking to advance regional economic development initiatives by investing in planning, infrastructure, information campaigns, and events promoting economic opportunities.

It is strongly recommended that you contact your regional Economic Development Officer to discuss your idea prior to the development of your proposal.

These funds are provided under the Support for Entrepreneurs and Economic Development (SEED) Policy.

Who is eligible?

  • NWT Indigenous organizations
  • NWT based associations  
  • Municipalities

Funding

Under the Community Economic Development program, up to $25,000 in support can be provided for:

  • Feasibility studies, strategic plans, evaluations and planning costs that investigate economic opportunities and build on existing community resources;
  • The purchase or further development of physical infrastructure (i.e. capital assets) where the lack of infrastructure constrains business development;
  • Improving access to business information;
  • Host and promote community-based festivals and events that highlight NWT products or talent and are key to economic development for the community.

Funds are NOT to be used for:

  • Infrastructure that is the responsibility of other government areas;
  • Land assembly or development of residential lands; or
  • Projects that effectively benefit only one business.

Equity Requirements, Costs or Fees

Equity requirements for all categories under Entrepreneur Support funding are as follows:

  • Group/Level 1 communities (Yellowknife, Hay River, Fort Smith, and Inuvik) – 30%
  • Group/Level 2 communities (all other communities within NWT) – 20%

Outside of Equity requirements, ITI has no other direct costs or fees associated with this program.

Documents Required

Applicants are required to submit:

Information required may vary depending on the amount of funds that are being applied for. However, expect to provide the following:

  • Outline of the scope and intent of the project to include: budgets, quotes, and related statements.
  • The names of any outside services providing assistance to the project.
  • Any other relevant information related to the proposal. This may include what is requested by the regional panel for evaluation and recommendation purposes.

Other information may be requested. Speak with your regional Economic Development Officer about specific proposal requirements and evaluation criteria; funding limits, equity requirements and specific purposes to which funding can be applied.

Equity requirements

How to apply

To apply for Community Economic Development funding, download the application form below and contact your regional Industry Tourism and Investment office to book an appointment to speak with an Economic Development Officer. Please include all required documents along with your application, or your application will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.
