As the NWT’s Commercial Fishers have headed out to work this summer on the Great Slave Kakisa Lake, and Tathlina Lakes, ITI’s newest fisher-support program has been getting important safety equipment where it is needed most - on their vessels.

Support for Entrepreneurs and Economic Development (SEED) Program

To date, the Commercial Fisheries Industry Safety Support Program has provided the means to successfully equip 15 NWT fishing vessels with COVID-19 personal protective and cleaning supplies; as well as required equipment to ensure compliance with Transport Canada’s Fishing Vessel Safety Regulations and Small Vessel Compliance Program.

Survival flotation suits have been the most commonly added piece of safety equipment under this program. Other safety equipment acquired by fishers through this program has included life rafts and radios or satellite communication devices.

This June, the Government of the Northwest Territories Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment announced the Commercial Fisheries Industry Safety Support Program.

Thanks to this this program, NWT vessel owners are provided funding to equip fishing vessels with safety equipment needed to meet both COVID-19 protection measures and safety requirements set by Transport Canada.

Even though the 2020 fishing season is into its final months, applications under this important safety program are still being accepted.
