Take-offs, landings and connecting flights in the Sahtu now have more creative flair, thanks to new art displays in Délįne, Colville Lake, Tulít’a, Fort Good Hope and Norman Wells.
While regional centre airports house art displays, the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) Sahtu Regional Office saw an opportunity to expand that presence and showcase artwork in every community in the region. The office worked in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure’s Airports Division on the project.
“When visitors arrive in a community, these display cases will give them a sneak peek at the unique artwork that is made in that specific community,” says Kacee Hunter, Business Development Officer for the Sahtu Region.
The initiative is meant to increase sales of locally produced art and fine crafts, encourage participation in the NWT Arts program and enhance local training and skills development.
“The hope is that we will start to showcase more complex, high quality pieces of artwork not found anywhere else in the world but the Sahtu! We have many supports available to artists, such as the Arts and Crafts Micro-Business funding through the Support for Entrepreneurs and Economic Development (SEED) program,” says Kacee.
Artwork will be rotated every 3-4 months to provide a fresh look and create opportunities for all regional artists registered with NWT Arts to be featured.
