The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s traditional economy division has sourced dozens of reindeer pelts from Finland for use in the Hide and Fur Procurement program — a revenue-neutral program providing artisans and crafters with materials at-cost.
This marks the first time reindeer pelts have been available through the program and comes in response to interest in the traditional arts community. “There was a lot of desire for something different from crafters I speak with on a regular basis,” said Francois Rossouw, fur marketing manager for the traditional economy division. “We were able to get a great price on some outstanding pelts, so we went forward with it.”
The Fur and Hide Procurement program is part of the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur program, which provides support, training, and funding for trappers and artisans through a suite of initiatives.
The mandate of the 18th Legislative Assembly calls for support to community-based traditional economy programs.
