Two luxury cruise ships are bound for Ulukhaktok beginning this weekend, bringing economic opportunities with them to the Beaufort Delta Region’s community.

Le Boreal and Le Soleal, each carrying 200 passengers and crew, are expected to arrive on September 3 and 9, respectively.

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment’s (ITI) Beaufort Delta Regional Office worked closely with the Ulukhaktok Community Corporation to develop an itinerary for each ship. Guests will be able to join guided tours, swing a club on the world’s northernmost golf course and take in demonstrations such as fish filleting, traditional sewing, print making and carving, ultimately bringing new dollars into the Beaufort Delta economy.

With cruise ship passengers drawn to the region’s traditional arts and crafts, there are countless opportunities for local artisans. To help artists prepare for the influx of customers, ITI hosted pricing your art workshops in Ulukhaktok leading up to the cruise ship season this year.

The workshops and training build upon previous learning opportunities hosted over several years in the community, including an extensive four-day Cruise Ship Readiness workshop that was conducted in 2016. A refresher of the Cruise Ship Readiness training will also be available in the community this week.

The stop in the territory’s coastal community also means opportunities for businesses and tourism in Ulukhaktok. This year, ITI will assist in the training of several positions that will be staffed by the Ulukhaktok Community Corporation, including golf course attendants, security, demonstrators and cooks during the cruise ship season. Regional Tourism Development Officer, Minerva Ward and Economic Development Officer, Eugene Rees will be on hand to assist with training, preparations and set up, including unloading the “event in a box” that the Department provided to the Hamlet in 2016.
