A snapshot of hotel occupancy rates in Yellowknife is providing yet another indicator of growth in the NWT’s tourism sector. Data acquired by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI)’s Tourism and Parks division shows year over year gains in February (nearly 9% increase), August (nearly 6% increase), October (over 11%) and November (nearly 9%).

The bright and stylish uniforms that will adorn Northwest Territories (NWT) athletes at the 26th Arctic Winter Games in Hay River and Fort Smith will also include a link to the NWT’s roots and traditional economy. Team NT’s official “walk out” uniform was formally unveiled in a ceremony on Tuesday.

It’s not every day that Disney comes to town. But, last January, as the temperatures dipped between – 30 and – 40 Celsius in Yellowknife, a small team from Disney arrived in Yellowknife to shoot for their next feature film. The snow-covered terrain, frozen lakes, and frosty temperatures of the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) offered the perfect setting for elements of the new sci-fi adventure A Wrinkle in Time starring Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling.
