From astronomy and photography workshops to film and fashion showcases, the Naka Festival celebrates the combination of aurora borealis and northern culture through a variety of themed events hosted by community organizations and representatives.

Naka (pronounced Na-ke) is Wıı̀lıı̀deh for “Northern Lights”.

The month-long event (March 1-31) is sponsored by the City of Yellowknife along with the Yellowknives Dene First Nation, the North Slave Metis Alliance, NWT Tourism and the Government of the Northwest Territories.

There are a variety of opportunities to participate in both virtual and in-person events.

In the festival’s third year, ITI is proud to support two exciting events in this year’s lineup.

The NWT Arts Program has partnered with the Yellowknives Dene First Nation to bring the Naka Fashion Showcase online. Throughout March, the Naka Fashion Showcase will feature five NWT fashion artists and the photographer behind the camera, to share their stories, honour their cultural inspiration, and celebrate their creations. Be sure the check the NWT Arts Facebook and Instagram pages for their posts.

Meanwhile, the NWT Film Commission sponsored the screening of two productions filmed on location in the NWT: "Aurora Love", and "River of Forgiveness.”

With its support for the arts and film sectors, ITI is supporting the GNWT’s mandate by supporting growth in non-extractive sectors. Community events and festivals promote economic activity and support opportunities for economic diversification, jobs and improved community resiliency.
