For National Francophone Immigration Week we’re profiling five Francophone immigrants who chose the NWT as their new home. In our first profile, read all about Paris-born IT specialist Amin.

Amin is 27 years old and was born in Paris. After completing his studies in information systems management, Amin received his working holiday visa in 2016 and departed for Yellowknife in October that year. Amin started out “wwoofing” and then landed a job at Tamarack Computers, a local IT business. He has been working there ever since. Amin provides computer-related support to a number of clients in the English- and French-speaking business community.

Challenges

“The cold in Canada’s North quickly made me realize that I wasn’t in Paris anymore, but rather in the far reaches of Canada, where winter is an adventure in itself.”

Soft spot

“Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories were a complete change of scenery for me. The desert-like landscapes, the cold, the wilderness, the Northern Lights . . . Yellowknife is also a welcoming, multicultural city. You feel at home here.”

Next steps

“I’m currently in the Francophone mobility program, and I’m going through the process to become a permanent resident. After that, I have my sights set on becoming a Canadian citizen.”

Words of advice

“Canada’s Northwest Territories are unique and unforgettable. Don’t be afraid to come for a visit, especially in winter, because that’s when Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories are at their most enchanting.”
